About Us...
St. Elias Community School is as unique as the mountain range for which it is named. From its beginnings in the 1950’s at a highway camp, the school has relocated and grown, with the last addition completed in 1994. Today our school staff of full and part time educators serve 142 students from K-4 to grade 12, about 50% of whom are of First Nations ancestry. Most of our classes are combinations of two grades, and our challenge is to provide great educational opportunities for both elementary and secondary students.
We have active volleyball, basketball and soccer teams, ski club and classroom ski lessons, and a student council as well as a high school music program that thrives with extra-curricular bands performing in Haines Junction and across the Yukon annually. With the dedication of many community volunteers and staff, there are also many extra-curricular groups and clubs such as Girl Guides, Treble Makers Fiddle Club, Homework Club, Southern Tutchone Cultural Club, Plan Canada child sponsorship and a very active Green Team recycling program in the school.
The SECS School Council coordinates a breakfast club each morning to offer students a good start to their mornings. Yukon Food for Learning also sponsors a school lunch supplement program. With these two programs and with the help of community / parent volunteers and bakers our students are offered snacks and food throughout the day to provide a health learning environment.
We welcome visitors not only to this website, but to our school as well. So have a look through our site, drop us an email, or just come pay us a visit to see why we’re so proud of our awesome little school!
