Principles Guiding St. Elias Community School Discipline Policy
All matters shall consider the law, and specifically the duties and requirements of the Yukon Education Act.

We believe:
  • Every person should be treated with dignity and respect.
  • An appropriate classroom environment is essential so teachers can teach and students can learn.
  • Parents are responsible for preparing children for school involvement.
  • Students are responsible for their own behavior. If they do not know this, they must be taught this.
  • The family, school and community all share in the responsibility to teach children responsible and acceptable behavior.
  • A positive and reinforcing school environment is essential to support proper behavior.
  • Teachers and school administrators must be able to manage and discourage behavior which is detrimental to the individual or others.
  • School must be a safe place, free from harm, intimidation or threat.
  • Children whose needs exceed the intervention available at school, should have access to other support agencies and treatment.
  • Special case allowances may be made in the case of individual differences.
  • Students should have input to the school rules governing them.
  • Students should have access to mediation on their behalf.
